Stowaway cat finds new home in U.S.

Published: April 21, 2006

There’s a happy ending for a Saskatchewan cat that hitched a ride on a truck and ended up in North Dakota.

Last week, the black-and-white mouser hid up inside the wheel well of a truck hauling fertilizer from Esterhazy. Eight hours later, after travelling more than 600 kilometres, the truck pulled into Eldridge, N.D.

The cat survived.

Some people managed to coax it out with some sandwich meat and to their astonishment, it was unharmed – with just a scratch on its nose.

The humane society in nearby Jamestown took it under its care and after the local newspaper ran a story a woman came in to apply to adopt it.

There has been interest from other corners. One woman e-mailed Jamestown from Saskatchewan to find out if the cat was hers, but it turned out it wasn’t.

The cat, which is going to its new home in a few days, has been named “Canada.”
