Help create a real Cinderella
Published: April 21, 2006
Tina’s Fund for Domestic Violence Awareness is looking to help would-be Cinderellas and Prince Charmings, with a Cinderella Sale and Chinese Auction next week at two locations.
The sale will provide reasonably-priced prom/dance wear to those who might not otherwise be able to afford it.
Brianna Durand, Miss Cumberland County 2006, is hoping that people will donate more dresses and suits to help make the dream come true for more people.
“Why would you let the moths eat it when it could go to somebody that’s less fortunate?” Durand asked. “Why not let somebody have a great prom, be like Cinderella, just like the Cinderella story?
“She was beaten and she was made fun of by her step sisters, yet she went to the ball, and she had the best time of her life and she met her Prince Charming. So maybe this can happen for somebody else.”
They’re looking for donations of prom dresses, gowns, suits, dress shirts, ties, belts, pocketbooks, gloves and shoes for guys and gals.
“If it can benefit people that have been abused, as well, in the long run, then that’s what needs to be done,” Durand said. “Just donate something. I mean, you’re not using it. It’s sitting in the back of your closet. Help somebody out.”
They have over 100 second-hand gowns, some suits and a tux, but they can always use more.
People can either donate or buy items at the following locations from 3 to 6 p.m. both days:
April 29 — American Legion Hall, Buck and Mulberry streets, Millville.
April 30 — Cohanzick Country Club, Fairton Road, Bridgeton.
The Chinese auction will have prom accessories like hair styles and limo rides for lucky winners.
Private dressing areas will be made available for shoppers.
Proceeds of the sale and auction will be split: Half will benefit the county women’s shelter and the other half will go toward a scholarship to Cumberland County College for a boy or girl who is a victim of sexual abuse or domestic violence.
Tina’s Fund for Domestic Awareness was created by Myrna Durand in honor of her sister, the late Tina Labriola.
