East County Cat May Be World’s Smallest

Published: April 21, 2006

Officials from Guinness World Records are investigating whether a 3-month-old East County kitten is the world’s smallest living cat, according to a published report.

The kitten, Heed, is nearly 3 months old. He is owned by Potrero resident Tiffani Kjeldergaard and, according to the paper, weighs about 2 pounds and is 3½ inches tall.

Heed’s competition is Mr. Peebles, who is full-grown and is 19.2 inches long and a little over 6 inches tall.

Kjeldergaard told the paper she feels confident about Heed’s chances to unseat Mr. Peebles.

“We’ve got him beat,” Kjeldergaard told the paper.

A mutant gene is responsible for Heed’s diminutive stature. He is one of a rare breed of cats known as munchkins.
