Couple Rescued After Drifting On Boat For Five Days

Published: April 19, 2006

A couple who spent five days on a boat, drifting off the coast of Florida, are finally back on dry land.

The U.S. Coast Guard caught up with the 72-year-old couple Tuesday, about 60 miles off the coast of Jacksonville. They had drifted all the way from the Bahamas, after a storm damaged their boat.

Strong winds broke part of the boat’s plumbing, which led to it filling up with water.

“I sent Nancy down after something and she said, ‘There’s a foot of water in the boat,’” explained rescued boated James Brown.

The water disabled the engine and the main sail wouldn’t deploy, but the couple used a tracking device to alert the Coast Guard of their location.

Despite their trouble, the couple planned to sail back to their home in Fernandina Beach.
