Miracle escape
Published: April 18, 2006
POLICE and fire crews say it was a “miracle” nobody was killed last week in a frightening multi-vehicle crash in Ardeer.
Two trucks and three other vehicles, including an unmarked police car, were involved in the collision last Tuesday at the intersection of the Western Highway and Western Ring Rd off-ramp.
The driver of a B-double truck was leaving the Western Ring Rd at Deer Park shortly before 5pm when his truck clipped a road sign and careered through shrubs on the side of the off-ramp, before slamming into the side of a parked four-wheel drive at the Western Highway intersection.
The truck then struck an unmarked police car and hit a van that was travelling through the intersection.
Bystanders looked on in horror as the truck continued through the intersection before coming to a halt after hitting a guard-rail on a grassed area close to the road some 50m further.
The crash seriously damaged the four-wheel drive, which was pushed into another truck in the next lane, and the unmarked police sedan.
“We were very, very fortunate there were no serious injuries,” Acting Sergeant Trevor Poulton of the Brimbank Traffic Management Unit told Star.
He said it was a miracle nobody was killed.
The shaken driver emerged from his truck without injuries and spoke with police in the hours after the incident, while traffic was diverted.
The driver was charged over the incident.
Sgt Poulton said that police are continuing their investigations into the collision.
“We’re looking for anyone who may have seen the incident to come forward.”
