SUV Rescued Before It Rolls Into Homes

Published: April 17, 2006

A sport utility vehicle that was tentatively secured to the side of a steep embankment, threatening homes below, was pulled back to solid ground on Saturday by firefighters.

“Brush and trees had prevented it from rolling the entire distance, however, it was not known how long the brush … would be able to sustain the weight of the vehicle,” said Los Angeles city fire spokesman Ron Myers.

It was not immediately known if the vehicle was parked and the brakes failed, causing it to roll, or if someone was inside the SUV when it rolled backward off of West Encino Hills Drive, he said.

The driver “either got Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride or watched it go over” the hill, he added.

Firefighters were dispatched at about 11:30 a.m.

It took a heavy-rescue vehicle and a search and rescue team about an hour to secure the SUV, Myers said.

No homes were damaged, and no injuries were reported.
