Cell phone leads to man’s rescue during storm

Published: April 17, 2006

A cell phone may have saved a Van Horne man who was trapped by a machine shed during tornadoes that ripped through eastern Iowa Thursday night.
Ryan Gibney was trapped just off a dirt road south of Van Horne when he called 911 from his cell phone.

The call went to Benton County dispatch. Gibney told dispatch he needed help because his barn had collapsed, and went on to describe pain in his leg and hand as the call continued.

Gibney’s grandmother Germaine Gibney says her grandson lives just across the road from the destroyed machine shed and attends Mount Mercy College in Cedar Rapids.

She says she is grateful Ryan had his cell phone, because it is dark out there at night.
