Pioneering heart surgeon says UK girl’s operation a breakthrough
Published: April 15, 2006
A heart surgeon who advised a British cardiac team in a pioneering heart operation says it has taught them a great deal about how the heart renews itself.
Surgeons at London’s Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children removed the donor heart from a 12-year-old girl, and re-started her own, after her body started reacting badly to anti-rejection drugs.
They were able to reconnect her own heart after discovering it was working quite well.
The surgeon who performed the transplant which placed the donor heart alongside the girl’s own heart was Professor Sir Magdi Yacoub.
He came out of retirement to advise doctors during the operation, and says the procedure is a breakthrough.
The leading surgeon, Victor Tsang, says the success of the operation is great news for cardiac medicine.
