Local Family Reunited With Puppy After Florida Crash

Published: April 15, 2006

For one local family, this Easter weekend will be the celebration of their own special miracle after being reunited with their puppy that disappeared after an interstate crash in Florida, NewsChannel5 reported.

The Safran family nearly lost their lives in a terrible interstate accident, and they lost their 6-month-old puppy.

“It’s amazing Evie and I are alive — even the police officer who saw the car after the accident said that,” said crash victim Gordon Safran.

Returning from Florida, Evie and Gordon Safran’s sport utility vehicle flipped over twice on Interstate 75. The vehicle was totaled, but the Safrans walked away with only minor injuries.

However, they didn’t walk away with their puppy, Diesel.

“I looked back where Diesel was supposed to be. The windows were all blown out and so was Diesel — his cage door was open and he was gone,” said Gordon Safran.

Evie Safran had a separated shoulder and staples in her head to close a deep gash from the wreck, but the only thing on her mind was Diesel.

“We stayed at a motel three nights recuperating, and hoping that we’d find Diesel, but we didn’t,” she said.

The couple came back to Ohio without Diesel, a rescue animal adopted from a Florida shelter three months ago. But before they left, an article was printed in a Florida paper about the couple’s accident and missing dog, along with a front-page photo of Diesel.

The Safrans got a phone call a week after the crash from a man saying he found their dog.

Diesel is now safe and home with his family. The Safrans said if they hadn’t found him, he would have been their last dog. They recently lost their 10-year-old German shepherd, Buster.

“It’s just a miracle that it happened for us being spared and for him,” said Evie Safran.
