Demolition for trapped cat
Published: April 15, 2006
RESCUERS today received the go-ahead to break through part of a wall in a historic building to rescue a cat stuck that has been stuck there for nearly two weeks.
Molly the moggie became trapped in the basement wall of a delicatessen in New York.
Rescue supervisor Mike Pastore described the site as “a maze of beams and pipes, going every which way.”
Molly is the resident mouser at Myers of Keswick, a popular delicatessen in the Greenwich Village selling clotted cream, Scotch eggs and other British food products not available in American stores.
After it was revealed the cat had been trapped for 13 days, the New York landmarks commission told rescuers they should “do whatever is necessary to recover the cat” from the 157-year-old listed building.
Mr Pastore said he hoped Molly’s situation would be seen as enough of an emergency “so that we can knock out a few more bricks”.
In an earlier rescue attempt, two kittens were brought to the scene with hopes that their mewing might trigger Molly’s maternal instincts enough to draw her out.
The attempt failed.
