Father Rescues Sons

The red flag was posted on the beach near the Matanzas Inlet. The red flag indicated rough surf.
That surf is what caught two children off guard. They were swimming far off the coast when witnesses say the boys’ parents started to worry. It looked like the boys were struggling to make it to shore.
The boys’ 40-year-old father dove into the water and swam toward them.
Meanwhile, their mother went to the Miller family and asked if someone would call 911 to help her sons.
The Millers, in town from New Jersey, grabbed a cell phone and called for help.
Carolyn Miller, a mother of young children as well, said the boys’ mother was concerned the children were caught in the current.
Miller said the father was able to usher his sons to shore.
An emergency helicopter circled around the scene, but Miller saw it leave once it appeared the boys were going to make it to the beach.
Then, much to everyone’s surprise, when the father reached the sand, Miller said he collapsed.
“When the father went down, his family asked us to call 911 again. So we did. A helicopter came back and even landed on the beach,” Miller described.
Sergeant Steve Briggs with the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office said a helicopter, Air One, had arrived to help the man who rescued his sons.
According to Briggs, the first call came out describing the man as unconscious. The next call described him as conscious and breathing. The heroic dad was rushed via ambulance to Flagler Hospital.
Briggs said the children were going to be okay. The father is a hero. Miller’s family was just happy to help.
