Sir Elton John’s breaking out his wardrobe for charity
Published: April 13, 2006
Sir Elton John and David Furnish are selling more than 10,000 items from their closet to raise money for the Elton John Aids Foundation.
Taking place from April 11 to 15 at a spot named Elton’s Closet at the Rockefeller Center in New York, the articles for sale range from US$15 t-shirts to a lavish full-length cashmere coat for US$5,000.
A particularly exceptional item up for grabs is the polka-dot suit worn by John during his duet with Eminem at the 2001 Grammys.
“David and I had great fun collecting and wearing these extraordinary clothes, but it’s even more satisfying to see them help raise money for the Elton John Aids Foundation,” said John. “There’s the most extraordinary collection of t-shirts, your baseball caps, your shoes, from flamboyance to classic. And spend some money to help other people who desperately need their lives to be changed and improved, and you’ll be doing a really good thing.”
John’s charity has raised more than US$90m since its inception in 1992.
