Passing motorists rescue girls from swollen creek
Published: April 12, 2006
Two teenage girls have passing motorists to thank for their rescue from a flood-swollen creek in north Queensland.
Police said the motorists caught sight of the 14-year-old girls desperately clinging to a tree branch protruding from Rollingstone Creek, in north Townsville, early this afternoon.
Firefighters were called and managed to pluck the girls to safety without being swept away themselves in the fast-flowing 40 metre wide creek.
The girls had been boogie-boarding down rapids when they got into difficulty.
Acting Sergeant Shannon Kerr said parents should keep their children away from flooded waterways.
“It’s far too dangerous and far too unpredictable,” Sergeant Kerr told Seven News.
The girls were chilled to the bone but otherwise none the worse for their ordeal.
