Longtime friends reunited in press box
Published: April 12, 2006
Fate, in the form of bad weather, played a hand in uniting Bob Carpenter and Tom Paciorek in the Washington Nationals broadcast booth at RFK Stadium.
Paciorek, a former outfielder and first baseman for the Texas Rangers, was on the disabled list in the late 1980s when he was tapped to sub for his friend Carpenter, who couldn’t make it to Boston because of bad weather, The Washington Post reported Sunday.
“He went into the locker room, changed from his uniform into a coat and tie and was on the air that night, ” Carpenter said.
Eventually Paciorek moved to the booth full time and is now paired with Carpenter for the 154-regular-season Nationals telecasts on the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network. It’s the first time the two friends have worked in the same booth.
Carpenter has spent the past 10 seasons broadcasting games for his hometown team, the St. Louis Cardinals.
