Cat is OK after leaping 25-feet from branch

Published: April 12, 2006

It was nine long days for Linda Glidewell, but her cat’s safe return was all that mattered.

Glidewell’s cat, Terra, climbed Chris Larson’s tree, near the intersection of 12th Street and 18th Avenue on March 29 and did not come down until about 8:30 p.m. Thursday. With the help of Eric Langley of Precision Tree Service, Terra returned home thirsty, but safely.

“I was relieved that she was OK,” said Glidewell. “I thought somebody might have taken her.”

Langley volunteered his services for free as he climbed the tree and cut branches to get to the cat. Terra started moving and finally jumped from a branch 25 feet up. She then found her way home to a happy Glidewell.

“This was wonderful,” Glidewell said of Langley’s effort to get her cat down. “He was clearing branches and shook the limb that she was on and she finally jumped.”

Glidewell said her 11-month-old cat has never done anything like this before and questioned what might have startled Terra up the tree.

“The big dogs next door could have run her up the tree,” Glidewell said.

Glidewell’s neighbor, Larson, was the first one to help get Terra to safety.

“I tried to use dry cat food to bring her down, then put a can of tuna on top of my garage. In the final attempt, I used a water hose because cats don’t like water,” Larson said.

After calls to the fire department, animal control officers and other tree services, Larson finally contacted Langley of Precision Tree Service, who agreed to help.

“He (Langley) actually climbs trees,” Larson said. “I was impressed with this guy because he volunteered his time.”

Langley could not be reached for comment.
