Woman Saved By Dog From Attacker

Published: April 7, 2006

POLICE are hunting a would-be attacker who was scared off after being bitten by a dog in Colne town centre.

A 42-year-old woman was walking her dogs along a back street on Skipton Road at 11-30 p.m., on Tuesday, when she was confronted.

The man, who was wearing a black hooded top and black trousers, approached the woman and pulled her back by her pony tail before grabbing her around her waist. Before he could cause any harm, one of the dogs jumped up and bit him on the hand, causing him to scream and run off.

Sgt John Fryer, neighbourhood policing co-ordinator, would not speculate as to the motivation behind the attack, but is under no illusion that had the dog not intervened the incident could have been much worse.

“Fortunately for the lady the dog has bitten the man and made him run off. We are hoping that someone might know who this man is, especially if he is nursing a dog bite to his hand,” he said.

“The dog has frightened this man off before anything could happen, and if it wasn’t for the dog biting him, things could have been much worse.

“We are particularly concerned because this man was out at 11-30 p.m. in a dark area of the town.

“We don’t want to speculate whether the attack was sexually motivated or whether the man was trying to steal from her, but it is worrying that he is attacking a female at this time of night.”

Following the attack the man was seen running in the direction of Charles Street.
