Rescue dog happy to be home

Published: April 7, 2006

Cold, weary and frightened, “Dare” the search dog was found about 9 a.m. today.

Ann McCurdy, the team manager for canines for Indiana Task Force One, found the seven-month old border collie herself after getting a tip from a Southside resident.
“He was so afraid, he would not even come to me,” said McCurdy.

She spotted Dare at a used car lot on Madison Ave., just south of Troy Ave.

The puppy was in the back of the business, hiding among used cars.

McCurdy said she knew she could not catch the dog by running at him and he was too afraid to simply come at her command. So she slowly approached Dare, and cornered him against a car while talking to him in a very soft, friendly manner.

It worked.

“He leapt into my arms,” she said. “I was crying, he was crying, it was pretty dramatic.”

Dare is now back with is owner, Janalee Gallagher.

He was not injured.

“He is good. Janalee has him back and he is very happy,” said McCurdy.
