Volunteers Donate Hair to Locks of Love

Published: April 3, 2006

A nationally known charity is getting some help from right here in Eastern Iowa. Locks of Love is an organization that collects hair from all over the country to make wigs for children suffering from hair loss. NewsChannel Seven’s John Wilmer learns how one business and dozens of volunteers are making their donations an inch at a time.

With a snip here, a snip there, volunteers are doing their part. Jiva Salon in Cedar Falls and the Sigma Alpha Iota sorority held a Cut-a-thon to see how many inches of hair they could donate to a very deserving charity.

“Locks of Love is specifically for children who are dealing with hair loss. Most of that is due to cancer, and we just decided we could donate our time and talents to doing a cut-a-thon for Locks of Love,” said Stephanie Bardal, the owner of Jiva Salon

“I was pretty selfish about it at first and wasn’t going to do it and I decided I was going to after thinking about my grandma and how much problem with her hair and chemotherapy,” said volunteer Kati Cox. She is the only member of Sigma Alpha Iota who had enough hair to be a donor for Locks of Love. But what she did donate will go a long way. “I got rid of 10 and a half inches but we did two pony tails so I’ll make two wigs.”

“I wanted to do Locks of Love when I was in third grade and I really wanted to so I did it,” said Georgia Henderson, a hair volunteer.

Jiva Salon is closed on Sundays but stylists donated their time and talents for this event.
Bardal says that her salon is just proud to be a part of it. “We’ve got a very young staff. They’re great gals and it’s just a great way to give back. They’re very talented at what they do so for them to come in on their day off when we’re usually closed and to be able to do this is just a great feeling.”

Jiva Salon takes donations for Locks of Love throughout the year. But you have be willing to part with at least ten inches of hair to be a donor.
