ndy Wall defied doctors by recovering from a horrific road accident - find out how you can support his parents with their charity trip

Andy from Chesterfield has been hailed as a walking miracle after surviving a horrific road accident which left him in a coma for weeks.

Just as doctors were about to switch of his life support machine Andy miraculously came out of the coma and has defied all the doctors.

The story…

On November 2005, Andy was knocked down by a taxi as he walked home with friends from a fireworks party.

He bounced off the windscreen of the car and was catapulted to the pavement, where he hit the ground head first.

Doctors feared Andy wouldn’t even last the night and claimed that his brain damage was irreparable.

The next morning, the family were told Andy’s brain stem - which carries messages to the rest of the body - was about to fail. It appeared to be a matter of time before he died.

Miracle

However, just as his family were faced with the agonising decision to turn the life support machine off, Andy started to show signs of life as a nurse was wiping his face.

Almost immediately, surgeons operated to ease the pressure of a blood clot that had formed in his brain. Staff warned that if he did survive he could be paralysed down the right side, never regain the power of speech and be unable to recognise people - even his own mum.

Incredibly, Andy proved the experts wrong, and gradually began to reclaim is life.

He started to make small movements and would grin whenever his sister, Joanne, would come into the room. After four weeks his speech began to return and soon after that, he began to speak in sentences.

The family’s joy was complete when Andy was finally allowed to return home, four months after Wendy had been told that her son would be dead.

Andy, who continues his amazing recovery, said: “I feel great and am improving everyday.

“It’s strange to think that I nearly died and that my family were mourning me as if I was gone. But it’s good to be back from the dead.”

Charity journey

Andy’s mother and step-father are now involved in an exciting motorcycle trip to Spain to raise money for Headway, the brain injury association - without whom Andy wouldn’t be where he is today.

Dave & Wendy Heath plan to take a 2000 mile round trip to Northern Spain on their Suzuki, complete with luggage.
