Cat rescue out of wall at construction site

Published: April 3, 2006

A cat stuck behind a wall in a house being built in the Memphis area got lucky when someone looking at the building heard a plaintive meow.

Nina Wingfield, supervisor of Collierville Animal Services, arrived with a knife and a couple of volunteers from the animal shelter for backup.

“I heard a hoarse meow,” Wingfield said. “When he knew we were there, it was a very hoarse, frantic meow.”

Wingfield said the cat had one paw sticking out. She used the knife she had used to break into houses in New Orleans while volunteering on pet rescue after Hurricane Katrina to cut the cat out of the wall.

The animal had been neutered and is calm and friendly, clearly someone’s lost pet. But it had become so thin during its ordeal that its ribs were sticking out.

The cat has been named Wally. The animal shelter plans to wait until Friday to give its rightful owner a chance to reclaim it before putting it up for adoption.
