Loved one reunited with lost little boy
Published: March 28, 2006
Police spent much of Monday afternoon searching for the family of a 3-year-old boy who was found wandering alone in Sunrise.
No one called to report the toddler missing, and officers went door-to-door trying to identify him.
But after the sleeping boy appeared on television, cradled in an officer’s arms, it was only 15 minutes until he was in a loved one’s embrace.
A passing motorist found the boy at about 12:30 p.m. wandering on Northwest 105th Lane near Northwest 28th Place, Sunrise police Lt. Robert Voss said.
The motorist, Billy Fuentes, told police the boy looked like he was trying to cross the road. Fuentes took the boy to his house and called 911.
Police arrived about 1 p.m. and began trying to find someone related to the boy.
A man who told police he was the boy’s father came to police after his sister saw the boy on the 5 o’clock news, Voss said.
The boy’s mother said the man is not the boy’s biological father, but is like a godfather or stepfather.
Police did not release the names of the boy, his mother or the man who came to the fire station to get him.
The man told police the boy’s mother went to work and left the boy in his care. The man then got called in to work, so he had his cousin pick up the boy from his job site about 8:30 a.m.
”Apparently the man fell asleep, and the child wandered out,” Voss said.
The cousin lives near where the boy was found. Police were still trying to interview him Monday night.
The toddler was taken to Child Protective Services so officials could weigh whether he should be returned to his mother right away.
Police were still investigating the incident late Monday, and no charges were filed.
