Baby sitter, boy escape house fire

Published: March 28, 2006

A 5-year-old boy and his baby sitter escaped a fire in a two-story home on Stetson Place yesterday morning before flames and smoke poured through the structure and caused heavy damage.

It took 35 firefighters almost an hour to put the fire out, a dispatcher said. The cause – possibly an electrical problem – was under investigation. The family was being assisted by the Red Cross.

“The entire house was engulfed,” said San Diego police Lt. Miguel Rosario, who responded to the call about 8 a.m. “Flames were shooting up through the roof.”

Rosario said the boy was watching television when the he saw smoke coming from the videocassette recorder. He ran to his baby sitter, who grabbed the child and called 911 from a cell phone as they left the house.
