Angel Food Ministries Feeds Thousands
Published: March 26, 2006
Volunteers at St. Mark Church are like angels to over a thousand families.
They started helping people get a big discount on groceries through a national organization called Angel Food Ministries.
Folks can pay $25 a month to get about $75 worth of food.
“And it is for everybody. It’s for the working people, the non-working people, anybody who needs to supplement their groceries a little bit, we welcome them to buy the food,” said Jacquie Underhill, host site director.
It’s an important service for all of these families, but especially the ones who really rely on it.
“It’s important for people who are poor like me, because for like $25 you get a whole months worth of food,” said food recipient, Heather Dalrymple. “I think this is just really nice, everyone here, taking time out of their busy schedules to help us.”
The Angel Food distribution day doesn’t just help people by giving them a good deal on food…it brings together an entire community.
Over 100 volunteers have been working together since July. They are making a difference for a lot of people, and that’s clear to see by the folk’s reactions.
“Certainly gratitude on the part of those that receive the food, but also an excitement in the community for volunteers as well as recipients of the food, that there’s something available they can participate in,” Father Scott Katren, of St. Mark Church.
Many folks seemed very grateful to receive a full box of food, but the volunteers seemed to be just as happy to be able to lend a hand.
