Rescue Crews Lower Injured Worker From 12th Floor

Published: March 25, 2006

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue officers saved an injured construction worker who was trapped on the 12th floor of a building on Friday morning.

At about 10:30 a.m., the man was working on what is at this stage the top of Peninsula, a condominium under construction on Northeast 183rd Street in Aventura, when he somehow became trapped under debris.

The man, who is a concrete pump operator and subcontractor for Gryphon Construction, fell when the ladder he was standing on was improperly secured, officials said. He tumbled about 18 feet to the floor below.

Crew members called for help. When fire rescue arrived, the man was conscious, which fire rescue officials said was a good sign.

A tactical rescue team converted a steel crate into a makeshift basket and used a crane to hoist the basket and the man off the building.

“He was actually lowered on the construction crane in the basket connected to the crane. This basket is usually reserved for materials and not personnel, but in this case, it was the fastest way to get him down,” said Lt. Shanti Hall, of Miami-Dade County Fire Rescue.

After paramedics stabilized the man, he was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital by an air rescue helicopter. Doctors said his condition did not appear to be life-threatening.
