Firefighters donate to Red Cross Hero campaign

Published: March 25, 2006

The Red Cross Hero campaign received a $1,000 boost from the “citizens of Claremore” this week when firefighters decided to make a donation to Assistant Fire Chief Mark Dowler’s “hero” effort.

“We are giving back to the community as they have given to us,” said Fire Marshal Jerry Ragsdale, who coordinates the Public Education and Awareness fund for the Claremore Fire Department.

“We use this money for education programs and other community assistance programs,” Ragsdale said. “This is just another way to give back to those who support us.”

The Red Cross works hand-in-hand with the firefighters during emergencies providing assistance such as food and water to emergency workers as well as assistance to fire victims who may need temporary housing, food, clothing and medical attention.

The firefighter fund also provides free smoke detectors and assist the department with safety awareness programs in area schools. The fund is solely made up of donations from the public and does not include any city money.

Dowler is just one of several community members who have joined HEROES for the American Red Cross, a campaign for Rogers County.

Each year, during March — which is American Red Cross Month — the Red Cross asks individuals from Rogers County communities to participate in this annual fundraising campaign. Each individual (or HERO) is asked to raise $1,000 or more to benefit the American Red Cross.
