Family rescued after 17 days stuck in snow

Six American family members were rescued after surviving for 17 days on dehydrated food when their recreational vehicle became stranded in deep snow in the Oregon wilderness, news reports said on Wednesday.
The six relatives - Pete Stivers, 29, and Marlo Hill-Stivers, 31; their children Sabastyan, 9, and Gabrayell, 8; and Stiver’s mother and stepfather, Becky and Elbert Higginbotham - were stranded at more than 1 200m in a mountain range in southern Oregon when they had tried to take a shortcut on a two-hour journey to the coast.
Luckily, they had plenty of food to eat and a full tank of propane to keep their RV warm. But when supplies began to run low, the two Stivers set out on foot on Monday to find help and were found by a government worker a day later. A helicopter located the remaining family members and snow machines were sent to pick them up.
The reunion was captured live on TV cameras and Peter Stivers said the ordeal was actually fun for the children. “They didn’t know we were in trouble,” he said.
“Just being in the situation we were in, praying together, made us stronger,” Hill-Stivers said.
“You’d be surprised how close you get to six people stuck in a motor home.”
