Published: March 21, 2006

A 22-year-old Swiss student was recovering in Altnagelvin Hospital today after cheating death when she fell 170 feet from a cliff in Donegal.

Rescue teams said the woman had a “miracle” escape when she slipped off a ledge near Kinnego Bay and fell between two rock ledges into the sea below.

She was the second woman in just half an hour to be airlifted to safety from cliffs around the Donegal coast.

At around 3pm the coastguard was called to Bloody Foreland after a local woman in her 40s out hill walking fell over a 100ft cliff and landed on rocks below.

Paramedics on a rescue helicopter from Sligo stabilised her at the scene before winching her to safety.

She had sustained multiple injuries and was admitted into the intensive care unit at Letterkenny Hospital.

A hospital spokeswoman today described her condition as serious.
