Freak throat slash miracle

Published: March 21, 2006

A WYE River man has survived a freak bar accident which cut his throat in two places.

Doctors released Stephen Prowse from Melbourne’s Alfred Hospital late on Sunday, but locals were amazed that the well-known resident survived after broken glass cut his throat about 8.40pm on Friday.

The drama started when Mr Prowse was celebrating his 30th birthday with family and friends at the Rookery Nook Hotel at Wye River. He fell and dropped the pot of beer he was drinking. The pot smashed and Mr Prowse fell on shards of glass.

The shards cut two 10cm wounds in Mr Prowse’s throat and he bled heavily.

Despite the heavy blood loss, three off-duty nurses at the venue were able to stabilise the patient until paramedics arrived.

Pub owner Paul Brown said the nurses’ quick thinking almost certainly saved Mr Prowse’s life.

“It was very fortunate that we had three nurses on the premises. They were able to help stabilise him and stem the bloodflow,” Mr Brown said.

“We fortunately had an emergency trauma pack in the town, which allowed them to put him on an intravenous drip and pump oxygen into him until the ambulances arrived. He’s a very lucky boy ”

Paramedics transported Mr Prowse to Lorne Hospital for immediate treatment, and doctors worked to further stabilise him to allow air ambulance officers to take him to Melbourne.

The air wing later picked up Mr Prowse from Winchelsea after late-night fog prevented flights to and from Lorne.

Despite the ordeal, Mr Prowse is expected to return home soon.

After learning that one of his customers had escaped a brush with death, a relieved Mr Brown suggested it was a birthday no one in the town would forget in a hurry.
