Explorer ends 5,000 mile dog trek

Published: March 21, 2006

A French explorer has completed a 5,000 mile (8,000km) dog-powered trek across Russia, in order to get people to think about the environment.

Nicolas Vanier’s journey took him from Lake Baikal in Siberia to the capital Moscow, the equivalent of travelling a quarter of the way around the globe.

Film from his four-month sledge trek will be shown in French schools as part of an environmental awareness series.

“My biggest thanks go to my dogs,” said Mr Varnier when he arrived in Moscow.

He told how the hardest part of the trip wasn’t slogging through the icy Siberian wastes, but when snow started to melt near Moscow, and he had to fit wheels to the sledge!

He’s now planning to write a kids’ book and film about the journey, from the point of view of his lead dog, Gao.
