Man riding across country for a cure

Published: March 19, 2006

Noblesville resident Ron Mumaw will be pedaling hard this weekend, but won’t actually get anywhere yet, but in another month he’ll be well into a cross country journey.

Mumaw’s 3,000-mile trek is an effort to raise $300,000 for breast cancer research, Developmental Services Inc. and American Diabetes Association. Mumaw is dedicating his ride to his daughter, Cambel Shae, who died at age 16. DSI is Mumaw’s primary charity.

DSI helps with therapy for infants and toddlers with disabilities and assists family and friends through the process. The ADA is special to Mumaw, whose father is legally blind and is riding not only for his benefit but also two friends who are currently facing breast cancer.

Mumaw will be raising funds today in Indianapolis during a 24-hour Cycle-Athon where participants can pay $15 per participant for 30 minutes of riding and $25 for an hour. The event will be at 180° Fitness, Body in Balance at 9135 N. Meridian St.

Mumaw said he will likely be biking for a total of six hours during the fundraiser. In addition to riding supporters can take part in a silent auction featuring items from IRL and NASCAR racers, gift certificates and memorabilia from well-known music acts.

“I think we’ll be able to raise a lot,” he said.

Participants and supporters will be treated to a fun event Saturday featuring several big screen televisions for college basketball viewing as well as other activities for the family.

“It’s a full day, there’s plenty to keep busy,” he said.

Mumaw hopes to raise between $20,000 to 30,000 this weekend to put him over one-third of his goal total.

“I just want to raise awareness about DSI,” he said.
