Writing, prayer saved her

Published: March 18, 2006

Cynthia Hatcher said she has turned to writing books to leave a legacy to her children and grandchildren.

“I want to let them know there are some hard knocks in life, but it can be OK if you have Christ in your life,” said Hatcher, 43, who has just self-published her first book.

Hatcher describes the paperback as an inspirational story about an abused 5-year-old girl who grows up to adulthood and ultimately forgives her abuser. It’s titled “The Abuser’s Daughter.”

Q. What brought you to write the book?

A. I have been through a lot of that myself as an individual. I realized a lot of people have had some of the same experiences. I just wanted to give people hope that there is something beyond the pain. There is freedom from pain and there is joy.

Q. What kind of experience did you have?

A. I started with marijuana at 17 and went to crack, drugs and anything I could get to drink. I got in with the wrong people and chose a life down into a road of destruction.

Q. How did you snap out of it?

A. I turned to God, got into treatment and have been clean since 1993.

Q. What role did God play in your recovery?

A. Even though I was praying before, I began to have regular church attendance and began seeking God. I read the Bible and now I have a more intimate walk with God. It has become more personal.

Q. Do you have a regular prayer program?

A. I pray regularly every day but not at the same time every day. But he (God) is my source, my strength.

Q. Has your husband helped you through your problems?

A. We met at the treatment center. I was just finishing and he was just going in. Since then he (Richard Hatcher) has become my support. We have been married for 10 years and now walk with Christ together.

Q. What did you do before you started writing books?

A. I started writing mostly journals in 1994. I graduated from Northwestern High School in 1980 and studied some at Wayne State University and Mott Community College but mostly went to work at McLaren Hospital. For a while was traveling around doing message therapy but now I have formed Hatchback Publishing to write books. It has always been my dream to write, I am living my dream.

Q. How long did it take to write your book and where is it available?

A. It took me two years. The book is available at Pages Bookstore in downtown Flint, Family Christian store on Miller Road, Amazon.com and my Web site, Hatchbackpub.com.
