Firefighters worked until well after daybreak at a house fire that began about 3 a.m. today on State Road near Summit Street.
The residents, a husband and wife, were asleep at the time but were awakened by the barking of the family dog. All three were safely outside the home when fire crews arrived. No one was injured.
Deputy Fire Chief Ed Hadfield said the fire appeared to have started in the utility room in the basement. The fire remains under investigation but Hadfield said they believe a faulty gas hot water heater may have started the blaze.
Most of the fire damage was restricted to the basement, kitchen and dining area, with smoke and heat damage through the rest of the house. Losses were estimated at about $200,000.
