Co-pilot jumps from chopper into lake to rescue man

Published: March 17, 2006

A Lake County deputy sheriff this morning jumped from a helicopter into Lake Griffin to rescue a 71-year-old man who had fallen out of his fishing boat.

John Smith of Cross City was clinging to the side of the boat about two miles from shore while his wife called for help around 7:45 a.m., according to the sheriff’s office.

When rescuers couldn’t see the boat from land they called for the sheriff’s office helicopter.

The co-pilot, Deputy Bruce Doyle, spotted Smith struggling to stay above water.

Doyle jumped out of the helicopter as it hovered overhead and swam to Smith. He helped the man back into the boat, the sheriff’s office said.

Smith refused any medical treatment and stayed on the boat to continue fishing.
