Woman, Unborn Baby Survive 5 Gunshots
Published: March 16, 2006
In what police called an “absolute miracle,” a Missouri City woman – shot five times by gunmen who broke into her home – is expected to survive, along with her unborn baby.
Temika Andrews, 28, four months pregnant, was awakened by glass breaking inside her Duncaster Drive home early Wednesday morning. As she got out of bed to investigate, two armed gunmen wearing ski masks fired on her, Missouri City police say.
Doctors at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center operated on her Wednesday and found that two bullets entered her body but passed through, Missouri City Police Captain John Bailey said. Doctors found three more bullets but left them in Andrews’ body “because there was some concern about the unborn child.”
Bailey said Andrews is in “intermediate intensive care,” adding “she’ll survive, and the expect the baby to survive, too.”
Police and medical personnel called to Andrews’ home Wednesday morning found her in her bedroom, and she was flown by life-flight to the medical center. By 9 a.m. she was recovering from surgery and talking to a detective.
Police said the two suspects, described only as black men wearing ski masks, ransacked the bedroom and opened dresser drawers, however, Bailey said nothing appeared to be missing.
“There’s something wrong here,” Bailey said Wednesday. “We’re not sure what’s going on here,” but it appears robbery may not have been a motive in the break-in and shooting.
Police used Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Department tracking dogs to try to determine where the suspects fled after the shooting “because we didn’t have anything to go on,” but the dogs didn’t detect anything, Bailey said.
Police believe the two men had a car waiting outside the victim’s home.
On Friday, Bailey said police still have no leads in the case.
