Cat rescued after 6-day ordeal in tree

Published: March 16, 2006

Anybody who’s ever worked in an office has more than likely seen the familiar poster of a cat tenaciously clinging to a tree branch with the phrase “Hang in There” motivating him on. Now one local cat who took that idea to the extreme has finally been saved.

A week ago Caroline Franks stepped outside to find a white long haired cat stuck in her pecan tree. She tried to coax it down but it remained adamant in its refusal to leave. Helpless, all Franks could do was watch and hope it would come down on its own.

Hope began fading when days started passing with no sign that the cat would leave its post. It remained entrenched, barely surviving off rain water caught on its coat. Franks even attempted to seek help to get the animal down with no success.

“I contacted the Police, the Fire Department, Animal Control, everybody,” said Franks. “I even called PG&E to see if they could use one of their ladder cars.”

Finally after six days a neighbor’s child was able to climb up on the roof and get the cat down using a long board. The animal, although suffering from starvation and exposure, seemed otherwise okay.

Says Franks about the rescue, “It [the cat] was just about as mellow as anything else. Luckily the boy who rescued it is a cat person.”
