Man rescued as truck burns

Published: March 10, 2006

A burn victim owes his life to the passerby who stopped and dragged him away from the flaming hulk of a pickup truck yesterday, Durham police said.

“He was just on his way to work and stopped and performed a small feat of bravery,” Det. Mitch Martin said of the Good Samaritan. “I’m confident in saying the gentleman who came across there saved his life when he pulled him away from there.”

The victim, 57, is in stable condition in hospital with third-degree burns to his face and body. He is expected to recover.

The man was found lying on the ground near the burning pickup on Conlin Rd., near Ritson and Harmony Rds., about 6 a.m. yesterday.

Because the cause of the fire is suspicious, police and the fire marshal are investigating.

“We don’t believe it was a vehicle fire as such that was started by the engine,” Martin said, adding no definitive cause of the fire is known.

Police are asking anyone who may have been in the area to contact them.

The pickup is a black, newer GMC Sonoma.
