Lochie’s a ‘little miracle’
Published: March 9, 2006
He’s already been nicknamed “Lucky Lochie”.
When Lochlan Emrae Shemmell was born at the Mater Private Hospital - Redlands on Monday, March 6, his parents Craig and Jodie still couldn’t believe that their miracle child was here.
Wrapped in a shawl knitted by his grandmother before her death 15 years ago, Lochlan is the third child to Craig, 54, and first to Jodie, aged 36.
Craig’s daughter Kimberley, 21 lives in a home for special children at the Gold Coast. His other daughter Kelly was killed at age 18 in a car accident at Mount Tambourine in 2001.
“Mum knitted the shawl for her grand children, but since Kelly’s death, there would never have been grand children. Now we can start again,” Craig said.
Lochlan’s birth is a special blessing given Craig’s brushes with death in recent years, before the insertion of a pacemaker.
He received the pacemaker in September 2004, after his heart stopped the previous month while driving.
His “brake” at the time was two houses, a staircase and a fence on Birkdale Road, just down the road from his car yard Birkdale Road Car Sales.
“It’s been a difficult time and we had both despaired of ever having children. Lochlan is a bit of a miracle kid.
“We feel very lucky,” Craig said.
