Little hero saves the day
Published: March 9, 2006
It started out as a normal Monday morning for the Phillips family of Chester Gap on February 27.
That wasn’t to last long. Janie Phillips had been somewhat ill before that morning and was feeling under the weather that day. But she had no idea of the turn of events that were about to take place. Janie was going about her morning routine, getting her children ready for school and daycare. Husband Brandon had already long since left for work.
Janie began to feel very ill. Then she suddenly lost consciousness and fell to the floor. Two-year old daughter Ali began to try and wake her mother while daughter Brooklyn, who is six-years-old, went to get the phone. It’s not apparent whether Janie may have revived enough at one point to tell Brooklyn to call 911 or if Brooklyn decided on her own. But either way it was a brave thing to do for such a little girl. And she did indeed get the help her mommy needed to their house. Brooklyn says she told the operator she needed help because her Mommy had passed out and wouldn’t wake up.
Brooklyn says she wasn’t scared at all and held her little sister’s hand and watched her until help arrived. Janie has since improved and is back at home, still under the weather but doing better. Brooklyn is a very brave and smart little girl. Luckily for the Chester Gap Vol. Fire and Rescue Department, she wants to grow up to be a firefighter so she can help other people too.
At its monthly meeting the Chester Gap Vol. Fire and Rescue Department presented Brooklyn with a community service award. They hung a medal around her neck and gave her a firefighter statue for the great job she did, not only calling 911 and telling the operator what was wrong but also taking charge and watching over her little sister until help could arrive.
Ali also was presented a medal for community service for watching over her mommy as well. The inscription on the back of the medals has the girls names followed by “In recognition of service given to save another”.
Brooklyn received her awards to the enthusiastic applause and cheers of the membership who came forward to shake her hand and tell her how proud they were and how they couldn’t wait tell she was ready to come out and run calls with them.
Brooklyn said her father Brandon, who ironically enough is a member of the Chester Gap Vol. Fire and Rescue Department, needs to now get an award of his own to put beside hers. Both Janie and Brandon are very proud of their girls, especially their brave little hero Brooklyn for stepping up to a challenging situation that would have panicked a lot of adults. Great job Brooklyn! All of us are very, very proud of you.
