Tika the dog survives being impaled
Published: March 3, 2006
It’s an amazing tail of survival.
Tika, a 4-year-old golden Labrador Retriever, was doing her thing - retrieving - when a freak accident had her owner racing her to the vet for emergency surgery.
Tika’s owner, Travis, heard the dog make a strange yelp while fetching a ball and went to investigate.
To his horror, he saw that Tika had impaled herself on a 14-inch long stick that had gone clear through his pet.
Travis scooped up Tike and rushed to Dove Lewis Emergency Animal Hospital with the stick still embedded in his dog.
Once there, emergency surgery was required to remove the stick.
Remarkably, the stick missed hitting several major organs. But it did graze an intestine and it had punctured a lung.
However, veterinarians were able to repair the damage and Tika is expected to make a full recovery.
Tike left the hospital only one day after the incident.
