Miracle baby recovering

Published: March 3, 2006

Phakama Dlamini, the infant who was dumped in a pit latrine and spent six days in gloom, in the midst of human waste, is recovering tremendously at the Mbabane Government Hospital children’s ward.

The baby boy, who sustained injuries on the head, buttocks and limbs was dumped around Mbabane three weeks ago.

A hospital orderly, who preferred to be called Mary, revealed to this newspaper that Phakama’s health was improving by the day and that the boy was showing positive signs of stabilisation.

“Phakama is a brave boy. His health is improving tremendously and his appetite as well as feeding habits match those one would expect from a three-week-old baby,” narrated Mary.

Due to the corrosive nature of human waste, the baby had suffered severe wounds covering almost his whole body.

It was gathered that when the boy arrived at the hospital, a fortnight ago, he weighed 2.5 Kilogrammes.

Said the orderly: “He is also gaining weight. As we speak, we are from the scale. He now hits 3.1 Kilos.”

This means that he has put on an extra 600 grams since his arrival. When Phakama was visited in his cubicle, he was found peacefully slumbering in his couch.

Mary has been given a special assignment to monitor Phakama’s recovery. She is from Women Who Care, an organisation established in 1985 specifically to take care of abandoned children.
