Croc rescue earns bravery award

Published: March 2, 2006

A woman who rescued a friend from a 4.2 metre crocodile is among six Queenslanders to be recognised for acts of bravery.

A Star of Courage, the top bravery award, has been awarded to Brisbane woman Alicia Sorohan.

Mrs Sorohan rescued her friend from a crocodile attack at Bathurst Bay, in far north Queensland, in late 2004.

She says she is surprised by the recognition.

“The first thing you think of was just jump on it and try and pull it off and then … my son came around,” she said.

“He saw me actually jump on the crocodile and he … shot it, but it hung on to my arm. I just couldn’t get away and you think, ‘oh, there’s my time up’. It goes through your mind, but anyway he killed it.”

Meanwhile, a Cairns plumber who helped pull a woman from a burning car is also among the people being recognised as heroes.

Ian Souter is one of six in the state being awarded an Australian bravery decoration.
