Cat and lion are purr-fect pals

Published: March 2, 2006

Arnie the ginger tom cat may not be King of the Jungle but his new friend, Safina the lion cub is.

The three-month-old from Cambridge’s Linton Zoo is sharing a house with Arnie and zoo co-owner Kim Simmons, and really seems to be enjoying her domestic comforts.

Safina is being raised at home because her parents did not have the experience to care for their firstborn. Her dad, Riziki, and mum, Karla were also hand-reared.

Safina, whose name means “beautiful one” in Swahili, has made herself right at home, spending much of her time being fawned over by Arnie, a ginger tom cat who has adopted the lioness cub for the time being.

But the situation is being closely monitored by Ms Simmons, as Safina is already much bigger than Arnie, and that difference is only going to get bigger.

She also stressed that raising wild animals like Safina in a domestic setting is only done when there is no other alternative.
