How we met our angel one night in Florida
Published: February 23, 2006
We have done our share of traveling across the country, always relying on finding motels or hotels by nightfall. I am now 78 and driving and Lou is 81 years old and not well, so we like to stop by 4 p.m. We became anxious Jan. 25 when we started looking for a motel or hotel at 3 p.m. but found only one on the way and it was booked. We drove on to Lakeland, Fla., and no sign of motels, so we asked for directions to the road that had motels on it, but again we had no luck.
We now became concerned when it turned dusk. We were lost, so we started asking for directions, but this didn’t help. By this time I was getting almost frantic. We stopped at a gasoline station with a food court and a lady named Wendy came out, so we asked if she could direct us. She said she would do better than that. She led us with her car, but the hotel she took us to was booked.
The hotel help called their sister hotel where there were two rooms available. We reserved one and Wendy led us again. When we arrived, Wendy tried to pay for us by putting her credit card on the desk and telling the manager that she was paying for this, but I argued with my credit card in hand and was trying to give her $20 for gasoline with the other hand.
By now I was crying and calling her “My Angel,” then the manager, John Loute with AmeriSuites, said he was going to “trump” her and he gave us the room. He was a nice man, so I gave him a hug and kissed him on the cheek. The room was a suite. Wendy moved our car to a parking place then followed us up to the room with our car keys and sat to talk for a few minutes. She probably thought we needed calming down.
She had an accent, so Lou asked her where she was from. She was from Sydney, Australia, and had come to this country to play professional golf when she was 21 years old. She felt that God had sent her to that food mart as she had no reason to be there. Her name is Wendy Doolan. She said I could look her up on IPGA.com as she is listed. She was for sure our angel that night.
Our daughter has made her home in Alice Springs, Australia, for 23 years. Ironic?
