Two Heroes Honored

Published: February 22, 2006

Eight lives were in danger Monday, on two different occasions.

And thanks to two good Samaritans, everyone made it out safely.

Fire investigators say an arsonist set the fire at 4013 SE Truman Monday evening.

Five people– including two young children– were inside but a hero helped them out.

“When you see a fire and you know there’s people inside, you got to get them out,” says Benny Young.

Young banged on the door to warn anyone inside of the fire that would soon destroy their home.

“When you see someone in trouble, you gotta do it, no waiting around,” Young says, “I’d do it again.”

Fortunately, no one suffered serious injury.

The city council honored Young for his heroic actions by presenting him with a medal and certificate.

But he wasn’t the only hero recognized.

John Hodges was honored as well.

Monday, he rescued three girls who fell through an icy pond in Central Park.

He rushed to their rescue, despite him having only one leg and walking with a crutch.

“I just kept my faith in God,” Hodges says, “I had some fears about my leg and swimming, but I kept my true faith in God.”

Was Topeka just lucky– to have heroes save the day twice?

Hodges says the coincidence is bigger than that.

“People are stepping up and saving other lives and that’s what we need to do out here,” Hodges says, “we need to take this nation and get involved and help people.”

Besides the certificate and medal both men were also honored by standing ovations at the council meeting.
