Hero postman delivers blind pensioner from flames

Published: February 22, 2006

A POSTMAN was hailed a hero today after rescuing a blind pensioner from an early morning house fire.

The 67-year-old was asleep in his South Queensferry home when the blaze broke out in an electric storage heater in his hall at 5am.

He was woken up by a smoke detector but was only able to escape the burning building when the postman came and helped him out.

A police spokeswoman said: “The man was very lucky indeed that the postman happened to be passing and went in and probably saved the man’s life.”

Lothian and Borders Fire Brigade Watch Manager Maurice Willis said there was “substantial damage” to the property in Stewart Clark Avenue.

The hallway on the ground floor was badly burned and the remainder of the terraced house was heavily damaged by smoke.

The man was today being looked after by family.

Neighbour Theresa Coles said: “The man is blind so it was very lucky for him that there was someone there to help him - he could have been stuck otherwise.”

She added: “The next door neighbour is in a wheelchair so it’s very lucky that the fire didn’t spread to his house as well. This whole thing could have been even worse than it is.”

Neighbour Alan Russell added: “All I saw were the blue lights flashing at about quarter to six this morning. We didn’t hear anything otherwise and I think most people in the street were asleep. I think the postman will be seen as a bit of a hero round here from now on.

“It’s very lucky he was passing, although I don’t know why he was, because he usually delivers the post at about 11am.”
