Woman Says Her Cat Saved Her Life

Published: February 21, 2006

A woman’s cats gave her the clue she needed to escape a potentially fatal carbon monoxide poisoning.

Dayton firefighters were called out to a home on Fillmore Street Monday. Inside they found nearly deadly levels of carbon monoxide poisoning.

The woman said she was feeling ill, but it was her cat’s behavior led her to call the fire department.

“I’ve been sick, and my cat started having seizures last night, so I started thinking maybe there’s something going on,” Sharon Middlelchyld said.

Investigators said she called for help just in time.

“Very lucky. She had a new furnace installed and apparently there must be something malfunctioning with the fluid in it,” said Capt. Stephen Ruef of the Dayton Fire Department.

Firefighters said the home did not have a carbon monoxide detector.
