Construction Worker Rescued After Falling 20-Feet
Published: February 21, 2006
Rescue teams worked for about one hour to pull a construction worker to safety after he fell 20-feet into a construction trench near I-215 and north Decatur. The man was airlifted to UMC. He was a bit groggy and complained of some pain but officials say the worker did not suffer any life threatening injuries.
Crews at the scene say it is lucky that the accident wasn’t worse. The machine operator was working with equipment in the area near I-215 and North Decatur when he got out to take some measurements and he then either tripped or slipped and fell into the trench.
Captain Cedric Williams, with the North Las Vegas Fire Department, said, “There was other workers that actually went in there initially first to try and get to him… There was someone there talking to him trying to make sure he was okay.”
The North Las Vegas Fire Department responded first and they then called in the specialized heavy and technical rescue units from the Las Vegas Fire Department. Even though the trench did not collapse rescue crews took all the precautionary steps to make sure the man was pulled out safely.
Captain Williams continued, “Anything can happen in these instances. So, that’s why they try to be very careful. That’s why they trench it and go through that training so it’s a safe excavation.”
The rescued worker was an employee of Tand Incorporated, a subcontractor on site.
The company didn’t want to release the man’s name but tells Eyewitness News he is in his 30s and suffered injuries to his ankle. He was released from the hospital on crutches.
He’s been working for Tand Incorporated for six months. The company says employees will be back at the site working Tuesday.
The trench is part of the construction project for a new Wal-Mart super store.
