Snow Doesn’t Stop Acts of Charity

Published: February 20, 2006

Saturday morning, Tri-State roads were blanketed with snow, and that made it difficult for Tri-Staters to get out to support a couple of worthy causes.

Scott McCord, one plow driver, explains, “What happened this (Saturday) morning, the wind was so bad it was almost like blizzard conditions. You’d go a mile down the road, and you wouldn’t have anything on the road, and all of the sudden, you’d run into three-four inches piled up.”

With plow drivers pulling overtime shifts to clear the roads, Tri-Staters were able to brave the elements in search of a hot breakfast.

Rafael brought his family to the YMCA Saturday morning. He says, “We got in the car, and made it here, finally. Marisa (Rafael’s daughter) was asking me why it was so slow. And i said, ‘Well, it’s snow, you know. You have to drive carefully.’”

The YMCA’s Pancake Breakfast is an annual tradition raising money for Y-Programs.

Alan Woehler, from the YMCA, says, “We weren’t really expecting this snow here today (Saturday), but sometimes it happens. So we’re just trying to keep it safe for everybody.”

And attendance didn’t seem to suffer because of the weather.

“It’s kinda weird. When the weather’s bad, lot of times you get a lot of people here because there’s really nothing else to do. It’s a great day at the YMCA because they’re coming out to support YMCA’s Programs that really impact the community,” Woehler adds.

The Mt. Vernon community came together to raise money for muscular dystrophy research - a goal big enough to overcome a few inches of slush.

Tournament Director Gerald Joebel says, “Everybody’s done a great job in braving the elements to get here and help us out.”

Robert Suhrheinrich’s child played in the basketball tournament Saturday morning. “Muscular dystrophy is a great cause, and we’re just proud to be in this tournament down here,” Suhrheinrich explains.

Spectators even found an upside to the harsh conditions - they had a warm gym to play in.
