Boy,7, saves 4: hailed a hero
Published: February 19, 2006
A SEVEN-year-old boy has been hailed a hero after saving four adults from a burning house in south-east Queensland.
The boy awoke as the fire began to take hold of the Perwillowen Road property at Nambour in the Sunshine Coast hinterland about 4.30am (AEST) today.
He awakened the adults who were still sleeping.
Fire crews contained the blaze within about half an hour, but not before the fibro house was gutted.
A Queensland Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said the five survivors were “incredibly lucky” to escape the blaze considering the house was not fitted with a smoke alarm.
“The cause of the fire is not known … but it’s believed to have started in the kitchen and dining room area,” the spokeswoman said.
The fire crews had “done a great job” putting out the fire as quickly as they did considering the rural property did not have tank water, she also said.
