Police rescue kidnapped boy

Published: February 18, 2006

A 10-year-old boy has been rescued by police after he was kidnapped from his family home and held hostage for nearly 36 hours.

Officers from the Metropolitan Police safely secured the release of the youngster from an address in central London on Friday night.

He was uninjured and has been returned to his family.

The boy’s ordeal began when three armed people snatched him from his home in Walthamstow, east London, on Thursday at around 11am, police said.

A rescue operation was mounted by the Specialist Crime Directorate’s Kidnap Unit, which tracked the boy down to an address in Victoria.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: “At approximately 10pm, armed officers entered an address on Great Peter’s Street and successfully rescued the boy.

“He has been checked over by medical staff and is uninjured. He has been returned to his family.”

Four men and a woman have been arrested for questioning on kidnap and firearm offences, and are currently in custody, the spokesman added.

Great Peter’s Street was cordoned off after the operation, while a search of a further address in Clapham, south London, has recovered three firearms.

Commander Cressida Dick, from the Met’s Serious Crime Directorate, said: “The investigation team are extremely pleased to have found and released this young boy safely. He must have undergone a terrifying experience, being held captive away from his family for nearly 36 hours.”
